Tianjin Nankai High School


The International Student Science Conference was started jointly and hosted in turn by Hwa Chong Institution (Singapore), St Paul’s Co‐educational College (Hong Kong), Stella Matutina Girls High School (Taiwan), the Hutchins School (Australia) and Tianjin Nankai High School (China). From 2005 to 2007, Hwa Chong Institution, St Paul’s Co‐educational College and the Hutchins School successfully held the first 3 Student Science Conferences. The 4th International Student Science Conference will be held in Tianjin Nankai High School from October 13 to 18, 2008. The theme for this year’s conference is Science and Health. In the past few years, the International Student Science Conference has become a platform of scientific exploration and friendly communication for th young students from these five countries and regions.

Tianjin Nankai High School, the original Tianjin Nankai School, set up in 1904, is the cradle of series of Nankai schools founded by Yan Fansun and Zhang Boling, famed patriotic educationists. The present location of Tianjin Nankai High School is the site of former Nankai School, which is known as a national major cultural relic protection unit. In 1978, Nankai High School was ranked as one of the key high schools of the country by the Ministry of Education. And now it is one of the demonstrative high schools directly under Tianjin Ministry of Education.

The past hundred years has witnessed the forming of school culture. Great Nankai spirit has been carried forward generation by generation. The school has created an atmosphere of loving the country, loving the people and loving the career. Both teachers and students believe in science, pursue excellence and have a sense of responsibility of serving the society, which constitute the characteristics of Nankai’s education, that is the atmosphere of the rich humanities and scientific spirit. Simultaneously, the school style of loving the country and people, being meticulous and pragmatic, being vigourous and aspirational and working hard to innovate has been formed.

Nankai has cultivated tens of thousands of talents. Many big names have emerged in the generations of graduates who have contributed a lot to the country. Among them beloved Premier Zhou Enlai serves as the most outstanding example, followed by Premier Wen Jiabao, Vice Premier Zou Jiahua, nine vice chairmen of the National People’s Consultative Conference, more than forty leaders at provincial and ministerial levels, and 56 famous scientists in both China and foreign countries. A number of educationists represented by three presidents of Tsinghua University, a number of notable literators represented by Cao Yu, and famous alumni from medical field and diplomatic field have made Nankai High School win renown both at home and abroad.

The school is made up of senior high school department, junior high school department and international department. 99% of graduates from senior high school department enter key universities of the country. Tianjin Nankai High School has been carrying out the traditions and updates itself to adapt to the times. A school running concept and a practice system with modern Nankai features dominated by the idea of high quality‐oriented education for life has come into being. The target of our education is to arm students with strong social responsibility, healthy body and sound mind, scientific and human accomplishment, innovative thinking and practice ability, to instruct students to be reserved innovative and able persons for the prosperity of China and the world peace and developmen. We take moral education as basis, meticulous scholarship, students as the foundation, and innovation oriented as the general plan to manage the school.

The contemporary school‐running guiding principle of “high quality‐oriented education for life” has gained satisfactory achievement. In recent years, more than 100 teachers have been elected advanced teachers of the country, city and district; more than 100 teachers have won awards for classroom teaching research and innovation in the country, city and district; and a number of young teachers have been promoted as high‐ranking senior teachers and outstanding senior teachers. Many students have become science‐skilled students, literacy‐skilled students, physical education‐skilled students and art‐skilled students. In recent years, the school has won 5 gold medals on International Physics Olympic Contest and International Chemistry Olympic Contest and one ilver medal on Informatics Olympic Contest. The school men’s basketball team, traditional Chinese instruments band and chorus all have high professionallevels among high schools. Nankai has established exchange relationship with schools of 20 countries from five continents, which has become a bridge for communication of elementary education between China and the world.

Tianjin Municipal Committee of the Chinese Communist Party and Tianjin Municipal Government have always set great store by eucation. Understanding the Course of Formation of the Universe from the Behaviors of Quasars

Superluminal phenomenon and ultra-high radiation power of quasars . Ever since the first quasar was discovered, mysteries regarding quasars have arisen one after another. It has been revealed by research that the radiation power of quasars is far greater than that of normal galaxies while their size is by far smaller than that of galaxies. Where on earth does this great amount of energy come from? Why is the recession velocity of quasars greater than that the velocity of light under observation? With its shape similar to a star, its spectrum similar to a Seyfert galaxy, its electric waves similar to a radio galaxy and so on, what kind of celestial body is the quasar really is? Demonstrate through experiment that the superluminal phenomenon is caused by distortion of space and limitations of the radio telescope and derive that the huge amount of light energy given off by the quasar is the residual energy of the early universe.

Mannitol has wide applications. In medicine, it is an excellent excipient of tablets, a diluent agent for solid and liquid drugs, a diuretic and a safe, first-choice medicine for lowering intracranial pressure and intraocular pressure. In the food industry, mannitol has the lowest water absorption among sugar and sugar alcohol and has a refreshing sweet flavor. Therefore, it can prevent food from becoming sticky and serve as the low-calorie and low-sugar sweetener for health food and food for patients of diabetes. Recently, mannitol has also been used for chewing gum. Due to its wide applications, the demands for mannitol have increased rapidly in the whole world. Its price is rising steadily in the world and it enjoys bright prospects of development. At present, there are mainly two methods of industrial production of mannitol: (1) separation and extraction of mannitol from kelp; (2) catalytic hydrogenation of fructose liquid or invert syrup (1: 1 mixture of fructose and glucose). The current methods have such disadvantages as low yield rate, difficulty in separation and high cost. Therefore, it is highly significant to make active efforts to find a new process of producing mannitol. This experimental study investigates the experimental process of preparing mannose from glucose by means of the continuous trickle-bed isomerization method, which provides the technical precondition for producing mannitol by hydrogenation.
